Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 November 2026
SaltSignal is operated by Stephen Hill, sole trader, ABN 75 235 187 242. In this policy, "SaltSignal", "we", "us" and "our" mean Stephen Hill trading as SaltSignal. This policy explains how we handle personal information in the SaltSignal mobile app (iOS and Android) and on this website. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
1. The short version
- The Free Tier needs no account. Your log, tackle, boat records, photos and GPS stay on your phone.
- Premium Tier adds an account and optional sync. Synced data is stored with our backend provider so it can restore on your devices.
- We don't sell personal information, show ads, or use advertising identifiers for tracking.
- The Premium Tier assistant answers from your log on your phone and sends nothing off your phone.
- This website uses no analytics, tracking or advertising cookies.
2. What we collect and why
Free Tier app (no account)
The app stores your catches, trips, tackle, boat, maintenance and safety records, map marks, settings, weather cache and photos in a database on your device. We don't receive this information. To show weather, the app sends approximate coordinates to Open-Meteo. Maps are displayed using Apple MapKit or the Google Maps SDK on your device.
Premium Tier account
If you sign in (email, Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google), our authentication provider, Supabase, stores an account identifier such as your email address or Apple or Google user ID. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we receive a private relay address. Signing in alone doesn't upload your log.
Premium Tier sync
If you turn sync on, trips, catches, tackle, boats, maintenance and safety records are stored in your account with Supabase so they can restore on your other devices. GPS marks (catch pins, waypoints and trip tracks) sync by default; you can turn Sync GPS marks off in Account & sync. Only your current personal best photos (longest and/or heaviest per species, where that catch has a photo) are synced. When a personal best is beaten, the old photo is removed from your account and kept on your phone. We use your synced data only to store and restore your own log.
Premium Tier weather
Premium Tier station weather uses data from WillyWeather for named Australian places. Requests go through our server, which receives the place you pick.
Premium Tier assistant
The Premium Tier assistant runs on your phone. It answers suggested questions from the log stored on your phone, works offline, and sends nothing off your phone. In the current version, nothing is sent to a cloud AI service.
Subscriptions
Payments are handled by Apple or Google. We don't receive your card details. We use RevenueCat to check your subscription status, which involves sharing an app user identifier and purchase records with RevenueCat.
Support emails
If you email us, we keep your email and message to help you.
This website
This website is static. It doesn't use cookies, analytics, tracking pixels or advertising. Our host, Cloudflare, may process technical information such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.
3. Permissions
The app asks for location, notifications and camera or photos only when a feature needs them. Saying no limits that feature, not the rest of the app. You can change permissions in your phone's settings.
4. Disclosure
We don't sell personal information or share it for advertising. We disclose it only to the service providers described above (Supabase, RevenueCat, Apple, Google, WillyWeather, Open-Meteo, Cloudflare), to the extent they need it, or where required by law.
5. Overseas disclosure
Your account and synced data are stored with Supabase in Sydney, Australia. Apple and Google handle your App Store or Google Play account and payment details under their own privacy policies, and they may process that information outside Australia. Some other providers we use (such as RevenueCat for subscription status, the weather providers, and Cloudflare for this website) may also process limited technical information outside Australia.
6. Security and retention
Data sent between the app and our providers uses HTTPS. Data stored on your phone is protected by your phone's security. We keep account and synced data while your account is active. If you cancel or close your account, we keep it for up to 3 months, then permanently delete it (purge), unless the law requires us to keep it.
7. Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: you can ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it.
- Deletion: on the Free Tier, delete records in the app or uninstall it (your own phone backups are separate). For Premium Tier account and synced data, email [email protected] to delete your account.
- Export: export a JSON backup or CSV catch log at any time, with an option to strip exact coordinates.
- GPS: turn Sync GPS marks off to keep coordinates on your device.
We'll respond within a reasonable time, usually 30 days.
8. Children
SaltSignal has no minimum age. Subscriptions are bought through an Apple or Google account, which has its own age rules. If you think a child has given us personal information, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.
9. Complaints
If you have a privacy concern, email us first and we'll respond. If you're not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. We'll change the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
